Chapter 138: Run! There's a monster inside!
"Hmph, Li Qiankun, do you think you can escape?" A thin mercenary with a face covered in camouflage sneered, his assault rifle pointed steadily forward. His voice echoed through the woods, carrying a hint of amusement and provocation.
Li Qiankun's heart sank. He quickly looked around, searching for a possible escape route. But in this dense forest surrounded by mercenaries, he knew his situation was dire. Yet, he showed no sign of panic. Instead, he took a deep breath, his eyes gleaming with determination.
"Hmph, you want to catch me? Not that easy!" Li Qiankun said in a low and powerful voice, while secretly adjusting his breathing, preparing for the upcoming battle.
At that moment, a burly man emerged from the mercenary group. Over eight feet tall, his muscles bulging like a tiger descending from the mountains, he was the mercenary leader, known as the Bull. He strode towards Li Qiankun, his eyes filled with both surprise and curiosity.
"Hey, isn't this Li Qiankun? Why are you here too?" Manniu's voice was as loud as a bell, breaking the tense atmosphere. His tone seemed to carry a subtle hint of intimacy and emotion.
Li Qiankun frowned and didn't immediately answer Manniu's question. He knew that at this moment, any words might reveal his intentions and plans. However, Manniu didn't seem to care about his silence and continued to talk.
"This isn't a safe place. You'd better leave now." Manniu's voice was filled with concern and warning. He knew the dangers of the jungle and didn't want to see his former acquaintances meet with misfortune.
However, Li Qiankun had no intention of backing down. He raised his head slightly and looked at Manniu with a determined gaze: "Brother Manniu, we are here on a mission. I didn't expect to meet you here."
Manniu was stunned when he heard this, then smiled bitterly: "I see. However, I still want to warn you that the danger here is far beyond your imagination. Let's go our separate ways."
At this point, Granny Jinfeng, listening nearby, grew impatient. She snorted coldly, her tone full of obvious disdain: "You mercenaries, all you care about is money! This isn't a place for you!"
Manniu frowned, but didn't lose his temper. He knew Granny Jinfeng's temper and strength well, and didn't want to clash with her at this moment. So, he patiently explained, "Granny, we're trying to make a living, too. Besides, we're not without strength."
Granny Jin Feng curled her lips in disdain. "Strength? Your mediocre skills are simply not enough here. The creatures here are more than you can handle."
Seeing this, Xia Liuqing quickly stepped forward to smooth things over: "Brother Manniu, it's not that we look down on you, but this place is really not suitable for you. Those weapons of yours are completely useless here."
Manniu's expression was somewhat grim, but he managed to hold back his anger. He gave Li Qiankun a deep look, then turned and left with his team. "Since you're so insistent, let's each fight on our own merits. Good luck to you."
Watching the mercenaries retreating, Zhang Chulan couldn't help but whisper, "Li Qiankun, who are they? Why are they here?"
Li Qiankun shook his head, a trace of helplessness on his face: "I don't know either. But I am sure that they are not ordinary people. As for their mission, that is even more unknown."
Zhang Chulan frowned. He looked around and noticed that the mercenaries were looking at him with hostility and curiosity. This filled him with confusion and unease. "These people all seem to know you. This is very strange to me."
Li Qiankun smiled slightly, trying to calm Zhang Chulan's nervousness: "Don't worry, Chulan. They are just mercenaries and have nothing to do with us. Our goal is to find the ancient tomb. Nothing else matters."
However, Zhang Chulan seemed uneasy. He gripped his weapon tightly and glanced around cautiously: "We'd better be careful. These people look difficult to deal with."
Li Qiankun patted the back of his hand to comfort him: "Don't worry, I know what I'm doing. As long as we remain vigilant, we can deal with any emergency."
Led by the mercenaries, they continued to venture deeper into the jungle. Soon, they passed through a dense forest and arrived at an area shrouded in thick fog. The fog was so thick that it seemed to swallow up all light and sound.
Seeing this, Granny Jinfeng immediately suggested that everyone camp here and wait for the fog to dissipate before moving on. "The fog here is unusual and may hide unknown dangers. We can't act rashly."
However, Zhang Chulan seemed a little dissatisfied: "Grandma, why are we waiting here? Haven't those mercenaries already gone in? What if we miss something good?"
Granny Jinfeng sighed and patiently explained, "Chu Lan, the dangers in this fog are no joke. We must act with caution and not joke with our lives."
Zhang Chulan wanted to argue, but was stopped by Li Qiankun. He looked at Granny Jinfeng, then at the mist, and finally nodded: "Okay, we'll listen to Granny and wait here."
Everyone quickly set up camp at the edge of the fog, waiting for it to dissipate. However, as time went on, the fog not only did not dissipate, but instead grew thicker, making everyone feel even more uneasy.
As everyone waited anxiously, a commotion suddenly erupted from the fog. Then, several mercenaries fled from the fog in panic, their faces filled with terror.
"Run! There are monsters inside!" a mercenary shouted, his voice filled with obvious fear and despair.
Everyone was shocked upon hearing this and stood up, ready to deal with the possible danger. However, at this moment, an even more terrifying scene appeared: a mercenary failed to escape and was swallowed by the fog. When he reappeared, he had turned into a skeleton.
This scene stunned everyone. They looked at the fog in horror, as if they saw the shadow of death approaching them.
Seeing this, Manniu was furious. He rushed to Granny Jinfeng and shouted, "Old lady! Why didn't you tell us this fog was dangerous? We almost lost our lives!"
Granny Jinfeng looked at him and said calmly, "I warned you, but you didn't listen. The dangers in this fog were beyond my ability to predict."
Upon hearing this, Manniu became even more furious: "You youngsters! Do you really think this valley is a place where you can wander around as you please?"
However, at this moment, Li Qiankun suddenly stood up. He looked at Manniu with a firm gaze, signaling him to calm down. "Brother Manniu, now is not the time to argue. We must unite and face this crisis together."
Manniu stared at Li Qiankun with wide eyes, as if he wanted to say something but swallowed it back. Finally, he turned away indignantly, his heart filled with resentment and anger.
As night fell, the fog thickened. The group had no choice but to set up camp and wait for the fog to dissipate. However, in this foggy jungle, fear and worry spread like a plague throughout the group.
Zhang Chulan sat by the campfire, staring blankly at the people around him. His heart was filled with fear and uneasiness. "Was it because of this fog that those people who turned into bones before were killed?"
Granny Jinfeng nodded and sighed, "This fog is only part of the danger in the valley. There are even more terrifying things to come."
Everyone was horrified upon hearing this, and they began to doubt whether they could make it out of the jungle alive. Only Li Qiankun sat quietly by the side, as if he had anticipated everything. His eyes revealed a firmness and composure, as if he could remain calm and rational in the face of any difficulty.
Manniu sat on the other side, his heart filled with regret and self-blame. He realized that his reckless behavior had led to the team's losses and made him worried about the future of the mission. He decided to talk to Li Qiankun, hoping to find a way to change the current situation.
"Li Qiankun, I have something to tell you." Manniu walked up to Li Qiankun and whispered. There was a hint of hesitation and uneasiness in his voice, as if he was afraid of being rejected or ridiculed.
Li Qiankun raised his head and looked at Manniu, a hint of doubt flashed in his eyes: "What do you want to say?"
