Chapter 19 Chief Ink Serpent
Chapter 19 Chief Ink Serpent
This tribe is called the Mo Ling tribe. Although they use the black snake as their totem, there is not a single black snake clansman in the entire tribe. The last black snake clansman died six years ago. However, Chu Xinyao also found out some information about the black snake clan chief.
The Ink Serpent Chieftain is the only son of the former chieftain. Seven years ago, after advancing to the eighth-tier beastman, he returned to the Ink Serpent tribe and seized the chieftainship. Legend has it that this great man is burly and possesses astonishing strength, but due to the corrosive effects of the Ink Serpent's venom, his face has become fierce and ugly. To conceal his appearance, the Ink Serpent Chieftain wears a demon mask year-round. This mask is carved so realistically that it resembles a real demon, sending chills down one's spine.
While Chu Xinyao was inquiring around the Mo Ling tribe, Mo, who had settled everything, came to her side. Hearing the people of the Mo Ling tribe talk about Chief Mo She, and seeing the hesitation on Chu Xinyao's face, Mo glared at A Da as if he wanted to devour him.
Ah Da looked around, avoiding eye contact with him, which perfectly revealed his guilty conscience.
As Chu Xinyao walked to the side, Mo grabbed A-Da by the collar and pulled him to a corner.
"Ah! Da!" he roared, enunciating each word clearly.
“Sir, you agreed to this before. All these years we’ve been traveling outside, you’ve always worn a mask. Didn’t you say that this is how you would present yourself to the outside world?” Ah Da tried to explain these actions.
Mo frowned. He had indeed given such instructions back then, but those were all to help him establish his authority outside.
No one knew that a Chu Xinyao, who seemed to be a saintess, would suddenly appear, nor did anyone know why Chu Xinyao was so foolish as to want to become partners with the Ink Serpent Clan, whom everyone on the Beast God Continent avoided like the plague. A'da looked at Mo's cold face and suggested, "My lord, why don't you go to Miss Chu's room tonight and tell her that you are the Ink Serpent Clan Chief, and that you are not the ugly and ruthless person in the legends."
Mo remained silent for a moment, his gaze fixed intently on Chu Xinyao's retreating figure, seemingly weighing the pros and cons of A-Da's suggestion. After a brief moment of thought, it seemed there were no downsides, and it would even allow Chu Xinyao to understand him better.
As night fell, Chu Xinyao was led by Xiao Hua into a wooden house. The layout of the houses in this tribe was different from the previous ones. The entire tribe consisted of wooden houses, which were neat and uniform, giving people a clean and tidy feeling.
Bathed in moonlight, the wooden cabin's silhouette appeared exceptionally soft. Chu Xinyao carefully examined everything about the cabin; tonight, she could finally sleep in a bed again.
The cabin was simply furnished, with a wooden table occupying the center of the room and several simple wooden chairs arranged around it. Animal hides and hand-woven tapestries hung on the walls, their craftsmanship deeply impressing Chu Xinyao.
In one corner of the room stood a wooden bed covered with thick straw. Perhaps Mo had specifically instructed that no straw mat be placed on it, but instead, a soft animal hide quilt was laid out for her. On the small tea table beside the bed sat an oil lamp. The type of oil was unknown, but as the wick flickered, it emitted a faint fragrance.
On the other side of the room was a stone fireplace, but it wasn't needed in this weather.
Xiao Hua gently closed the door, leaving Chu Xinyao alone in the wooden house. She sat quietly on the edge of the bed, her heart filled with curiosity.
Mo arrived at the wooden house and gently knocked on the door.
"The door isn't locked, come in."
"Xinyao, here, this is dinner." They used to eat two meals a day, but since meeting Chu Xinyao, they have started eating three meals a day.
"Hey, it's here." Looking at the bowl of green porridge in Mo's hand, she couldn't help but frown. Her good appetite seemed to have been affected by the strange color.
"What is this?" Chu Xinyao asked with a hint of disdain.
Sensing the disdain in her words, Mo smiled slightly and, as if by magic, took out a small cloth bag from his black robe and placed it on the table.
"This is a specialty of the Mo Ling tribe. Try it. If you don't like it, I'll grill some meat for you." Mo looked at her with some affection.
Upon hearing about the barbecue, Chu Xinyao shook her head: "Forget about the barbecue, let me try this instead! What's in this cloth bag?" she asked curiously.
She picked up the wooden spoon and scooped up a mouthful of the green paste, putting it in her mouth. The apocalypse had worn her down to apathy; as long as she could eat, she was fine. However, when she tasted that mouthful of green paste, her eyes widened involuntarily. It was a flavor she had never tasted before, refreshing with a hint of sweetness. With that one bite, she seemed to feel the breath of the forest and the fragrance of the earth.
"This...is delicious!"
Mo explained, "This is a plant unique to the Mo Ling tribe. The paste made from it is called Green Spirit Paste. It not only has a unique taste but also strengthens the body. This paste is one of the main reasons I came here. It is especially suitable for pregnant females and babies."
Chu Xinyao nodded, then scooped up another spoonful and put it in her mouth. This time, she was prepared to savor it carefully, but then she realized something was wrong. "Are you treating me like a little brat?"
"No, no, I was wrong, I misspoke. It is equally welcome to beautiful females like you."
"That's more like it. What's in this cloth bag?" she asked again, her gaze falling on the small cloth bag.
Mo gently untied the cloth bundle, revealing what was inside—some dried petals and leaves, as well as some crystals.
“This is also a specialty of the Mo Ling tribe, flower tea. You can make a drink by steeping these petals and leaves in water. Here, let me make you a cup!” Mo took out a water pouch and stuffed the petals and leaves into it.
Chu Xinyao looked through the wooden window; the sky outside had already darkened. "It's evening, and you want me to drink tea?"
"What's wrong?" He had already brewed the flower tea, poured a cup into a bamboo cup, and handed it to Chu Xinyao.
Chu Xinyao took the cup. Goodness, it was cold brew. She took a small sip and tasted it; the flavor was refreshing with a hint of sweetness.
"This herbal tea has a sleep-inducing effect, so it's perfect to drink at night."
Chu Xinyao nodded. That was alright; it wouldn't keep her awake at night if she drank it. "Then what's this?" she asked, pointing to the several lenses in the cloth bag.
Mo took a piece and held it to Chu Xinyao's lips, "Try it."
Chu Xinyao slightly opened her mouth, letting Mo put it in. The crystal slowly melted on her tongue, releasing a sweet taste. It was sugar! "Mmm, so sweet, how did you do that?"
Mo smiled and began to explain the process of making this candy. The people in the tribe would mix the honey they collected with the juices of the tribe's unique flowers and herbs, boil it into syrup, and then crystallize it into sugar.
"Although it doesn't have the sleep-aiding effect of flower tea or the health-strengthening effect of Green Spirit Paste, its unique sweetness makes it very popular. The Ink Spirit Tribe relies on these to allow its people to live comfortably without having to hunt every day."
“Their tribe is truly remarkable,” Chu Xinyao said sincerely.
"Ah."
The two were quiet for a while. Chu Xinyao continued eating her Green Spirit Paste, while Mo didn't know what to say for a moment.
"Xinyao, about what you said before about wanting to find a member of the Ink Serpent Clan to be your partner, I..."
“Oh, right,” Chu Xinyao suddenly put down her bowl, “I was going to talk to you about this too. You don’t need to keep an eye on the Ink Serpent Tribe for me. I don’t want to find a partner among the Ink Serpent Tribe.”
"Huh?" Mo looked shocked. Why did he suddenly change his mind?
Seeing his surprised expression, Chu Xinyao said with dissatisfaction, "What? What's so surprising about that? I've inquired about it. The Ink Serpent Clan's beast form contains toxins that can corrode their faces. I want to find a powerful beastman who can be devoted to me. I'm so beautiful, why should I wrong myself and find an ugly monster as a partner?"
Mo was furious, and that was indeed the reason. He suddenly had a strong urge to drag out his past self and Ah Da and give them a good beating.
"Xinyao, I want to tell you something, but don't be angry after you hear it." Mo carefully looked at Chu Xinyao's face, and seeing that she didn't have any displeasure, he continued, "Have I been keeping quiet about my full name all this time?"
He has a full name? Isn't it just Mo?
Mo suddenly extended his hand, "Let me formally introduce myself. Hello, Chu Xinyao. My name is She Mo, and I am the patriarch of the Mo She clan."
