Chapter 127 Return at Night
Chapter 127 Return at Night
Lu He sneaked back to the capital under cover of night, leaving Blackbird and the Empress at the Elite Soldiers Hall.
She needed to hurry into the palace to see the eldest princess and tell her about her plans with the empress.
He had the jade pendant given to him by the eldest princess, so he could enter the palace without any hindrance.
Li Cen was fast asleep in her room when the palace servants at the door were quite surprised that Mr. Lu had come to the Princess's residence in the middle of the night.
"Her Highness is resting." Neither the maid nor the eunuch dared to go in and deliver the message; who would dare to wake their master at this hour?
Lu He was anxious and paced back and forth at the door. Because she couldn't expose the sentry, she didn't use the sentry's communication method and had to come herself.
Besides, now that the Emperor knows the Empress is missing, he will be extra careful with the sentries. So we need to keep a low profile these days and reduce our contact with the sentries. We can't let the Emperor know that Li Cen is also controlling the sentries.
"No need for you to announce my arrival, I'll go in myself! I'll take responsibility for whatever happens, it's none of your business." With that, she raised the jade pendant and was about to barge in. The palace servants initially wanted to stop her, but seeing the princess's jade pendant, they dared not stop her; seeing the pendant was like seeing the princess herself.
And so, Lu He entered the Princess's residence without any hindrance.
Upon reaching the inner courtyard, Lu He encountered the guards and palace maids stationed at the entrance by Li Cen. She was stopped again, this time because having the jade pendant was not an option.
"I really have something very important to say!" Lu He tried to shout, but someone quickly covered her mouth.
She turned around and saw that it was Li Cen's personal maid, whom she had seen many times before.
"It's you," Lu He said, feeling a little embarrassed, as she hadn't remembered the person's name. "Please inform them for me."
The head palace maid shook her head: "No need, come in with me." Her gaze towards Lu He held a deeper meaning.
With the princess's personal maidservant accompanying her, no one dared to stop her.
As she entered the room, she smelled a faint fragrance, which seemed to be some kind of calming incense. The head palace maid nodded to her: "You may go in. His Highness is resting behind the screen. I will keep watch here."
"Oh, thank you... May I ask your name, miss?"
"Autumn Snow".
"Yes, thank you, Sister Qiuxue." After thanking her, Lu He went behind the screen.
Passing the screen, there was a carved rosewood bed with sheer curtains hanging down. There was an incense burner at the head of the bed, and the fragrance that I smelled when I entered came from here. As I got closer, the fragrance was rich, pleasant and pervasive.
"Your Highness, the Eldest Princess..." Lu He bowed to the person inside the curtain.
There was no response from the bed; perhaps the calming incense had put the patient into a deep sleep.
"Your Highness?" Lu He took a step closer and called her softly again, but there was still no response.
Lu He had no choice but to step forward and lift the curtain with her hand: "Li Cen..." She had just opened her mouth when a pair of slender, fair hands grabbed her collar and pulled her onto the bed.
Lu He gently lay on Li Cen's body, not daring to move at all.
She heard even breathing sounds beside her. Li Cen didn't seem to be awake; he just instinctively grabbed her.
“Your Highness…Your Highness…” Lu He anxiously leaned close to Li Cen’s ear and whispered, “Li Cen…wake up…”
Li Cen finally opened her eyes, her sleepy gaze turning to one of surprise. She then pushed Lu He away, asking, "What are you doing in my bed?"
"Uh, you just dragged me up here..."
"...You, coming here in the middle of the night...you," Li Cen suddenly panicked and stammered, "Qiu Xue let you in?"
"Yes, don't blame her. I have something important to discuss with you." Lu He quickly explained, afraid that Li Cen would blame Qiu Xue.
How could Li Cen blame Qiu Xue? She knew that Qiu Xue had discovered her extraordinary dependence on Lu He and hoped that she could open her heart and make a true friend.
"Why don't you get off the bed first..." The dim candlelight made it impossible to tell if Li Cen blushed, but her evasive eyes showed her embarrassment.
Lu He was still sitting on the bed, which was indeed improper. She quickly got off the bed and bowed to Li Cen: "Your Highness, please forgive me!"
"You just said you had something important to discuss with me?" To ease the awkward silence, Li Cen quickly changed the subject.
Lu He nodded and recounted everything he had seen and heard at Hanshui Temple to Li Cen.
