Chapter 19 Beware of your eyes!

Chapter 19 Beware of your eyes!

That night, Lu He held Xia Lan in his arms, using his arm as a pillow. Her fever had subsided, and she was sleeping soundly.

Having maintained one position for too long, her arm was a little numb. Lu He carefully withdrew her arm and gently moved Xia Lan's head onto the pillow.

She gazed at the adorable little face, a mix of emotions welling up inside her—pity, or perhaps doting? Had she really fallen for a two-dimensional character? She shook her head, trying to clear her mind. This was a cartoon character, not a living person…

Lu He put on a silk bathrobe, walked out of the room, strolled to the balcony of the first-floor living room, opened the French windows, lit a cigarette, and stared blankly at the drizzling rain outside.

The room was so quiet; it seemed Dr. Zhao had already gone back. Duanmu Cong probably wasn't dead; it would be best to send him away first thing tomorrow morning. I didn't want him to have any more contact with Xia Lan.

Her thoughts were far away at that moment, and she didn't notice at all that someone was approaching behind her.

Duanmu Cong woke up groggily, wanting to find the toilet. He groped his way out of the guest room and walked to the living room on the first floor, where he saw a slender figure standing in front of the huge French window. Her deep eyes reflected the embers of a cigarette butt, flickering on and off, giving off a captivating and unattainable feeling.

His gaze was deeply drawn to her. When did Wen Shiyu acquire such a mature and alluring charm?

He had never really looked at this woman who was always chasing after him properly before. She was childish, selfish, and vicious, making her someone he had no interest in getting to know.

But how can people change so easily? Or is it that people say they become different as they grow up? Come to think of it, Wen Shiyu's change should have started after he rejected the engagement without hesitation that day. Was she hurt?

Duanmu's mind was wandering, but his eyes were glued to Wen Shiyu.

A gust of wind blew in at just the right moment, lifting Lu He's long dress and splashing rainwater onto her body. The rainwater, combined with the moonlight, resembled shimmering starlight.

Lu He was startled by the sudden wind and rain. She took a step back and turned around. Her stunning beauty immediately struck Duanmu Cong's eyes.

"What are you looking at?" Lu He's cold voice revealed her displeasure.

"I... I just wanted to go to the restroom." Duanmu Cong felt a little guilty for no reason, but then he remembered that this woman was in love with him to death, so he immediately became righteous and deliberately used his magnetic voice, along with his expression and gaze: "I saw you when I was passing by, and I thought you were very beautiful."

"Did I give you permission to see it?" The queenly, questioning voice was tinged with anger; she clearly felt offended.

"You... are you unhappy? Would I be willing to stop and take a good look at you?" Duanmu Cong couldn't believe that Wen Shiyu would get angry because of his praise.

Lu He chuckled, "Aren't you a little too confident? Why should I be happy because you're looking at me? Who are you?" Her sarcasm was merciless.

"Heh," Duanmu Cong sneered. This woman was very skilled at playing hard to get. "Woman, you're playing with fire!" he said, uttering that classic line.

"Shut up!" Lu He suppressed the urge to vomit. This male lead was so greasy. She really didn't know what the original female second lead liked about him. Did she like that he didn't need oil when he cooked?

"I advise you to behave yourself, or I'll gouge out your eyes! Also, this is my home, I can make you get out anytime!" Lu He calmed his churning stomach: "You get out of here as soon as it's light."

"Xiaoyu, are you resentful that I treated you badly before?" Duanmu Cong remained confident. Although he was puzzled by Wen Shiyu's attitude, he didn't believe this woman wasn't captivated by his charm. He felt that Wen Shiyu's anger at this moment was a release of resentment and frustration from not being noticed by him for a long time, and he was happy to bear her grievances. "What grievances do you have? Vent them out, I'll take it!" he said righteously.

Lu He sighed. Enough was enough. In desperation, she asked only one question: "Has your fever gone down?"

Duanmu Cong chuckled inwardly. Sure enough, this woman still cares about me. No matter how well she pretends, she can't hide her affection: "I'm all better now. I'm fine, but my head is still a little dizzy."

"Justin, throw him out!"

The next day, Xia Lan didn't wake up until late afternoon. She struggled to open her eyes, feeling sore all over and unable to get up. Just then, a pair of warm hands touched her forehead. "The fever has gone down and hasn't recurred, thank goodness." It was Lu He, who was sitting by the bedside, watching over her.

"Xiaoyu? Didn't you get any rest all night?" Xia Lan looked at Lu He's obvious dark circles with concern.

"I'm asleep. I'm just getting old, so I wake up early..." she changed the subject.

Huh? Old? Aren't you the same age as me? Xia Lan was full of question marks.

But she didn't have time to think about that. She struggled to get up: "By the way, where's Acong? Is he alright?"

Seeing how weak she was, yet still wanting to see Duanmu Cong, Lu He felt a pang of sadness, a bittersweet feeling welling up inside her.

“He’s gone, he’s doing very well.” Lu He answered Xia Lan anyway, and deliberately made the words “doing very well” sound sarcastic.

"Pfft," Xia Lan couldn't help but burst out laughing when she heard her say that.

"What are you laughing at?" Lu He raised an eyebrow, and a smile unconsciously appeared on her lips.

"Hahaha, it's nothing," Xia Lan's eyes curved into crescents: "I suddenly find you very cute."

"Hahahaha..." For some reason, Xia Lan's laughter seemed to have a healing power. Lu He felt infected and couldn't help but laugh along with her.

Perhaps the beginning of falling for someone is when their emotions start to sway you...
