Well, the two were on the same wavelength; one knew the other didn't want to talk, yet kept asking. The other, knowing the other would keep asking, still didn't want to say. And so, the stalemate continued for a long time until finally, Chen Feng couldn't take it anymore.
"From now on, this topic is not to be mentioned again, and you are not allowed to tell anyone what you saw," Chen Feng said sternly.
The little girl asked, "Why?"
Chen Feng said seriously, "Because I want to keep some privacy. If you ask again, or if you tell others, I won't bring you out again next time."
The girl nodded. "Deal." She didn't want to lose her chance to go out and have fun because of this.
The two returned to the Martial Arts Academy. At the gate, the two guards told Chen Feng that no one had noticed their departure yet. Chen Feng nodded and went back to his dormitory. He had just lain down when he heard a knock on the door. "Knock, knock, knock," someone knocked. Chen Feng shook his head; it was always something going on. He couldn't even get a good night's sleep.
The knocking continued, and Chen Feng had no choice but to get up and open the door.
The door opened, and standing outside was a person Chen Feng recognized—Teacher Zhang, one of the instructors at the Martial Arts Academy. Chen Feng nodded. "Is there something you need?"
Teacher Zhang looked at Chen Feng with a contemptuous gaze and said, "I came here to tell you that the academy will be holding a teacher competition in a few days. All the students in the academy will be watching, so don't mess it up." This Teacher Zhang looked down on Chen Feng from the bottom of his heart. He thought that Chen Feng got into the martial arts academy as a teacher through back channels.
Chen Feng nodded. "Okay, I understand."
After saying that, Teacher Zhang left. Chen Feng didn't take it seriously. To put it bluntly, a teachers' competition is just a fight between teachers, right? What's the big deal? Haven't I been in enough fights myself? Chen Feng didn't dwell on it and simply turned around and went back to his room to sleep. Lying in bed, Chen Feng muttered to himself, based on yesterday's experience, he wasn't sure if he could sleep well tonight. Of course, he hadn't heard of anyone stealing anything or any other trouble today; almost everything was settled. Chen Feng thought about it and figured he should be able to get a good night's sleep tonight. Yes, a good night's sleep.
The next morning, as dawn broke, Chen Feng got up early, washed up quickly, and went to the cafeteria to wait for breakfast. Someone came to call him, but Chen Feng was already gone. When Chen Feng arrived at the cafeteria, he found it was already open. He thought about it; the time someone called him for breakfast yesterday was much later than this time. The cafeteria should open at a fixed time, so the person must have already finished eating before coming. No wonder they told him to come early, or there wouldn't be any food.
However, I can't blame them. After all, they have no obligation to help me. Moreover, Chen Feng looked at the few leftovers left and was surprised that people were scrambling for them so quickly. I got up early enough today and only ate some leftovers. If he had invited me to come over yesterday, I'm afraid we would have only been able to eat some leftovers as well.
Chen Feng looked at the people and suddenly felt a pang of emotion. They had to fight for this food to get a bite, and yet they ate it with such relish. It seemed everyone was struggling to survive. He decided he'd get up even earlier from now on to avoid eating leftovers.
After dinner, Chen Feng went to work and classes on time as usual. The whole day passed uneventfully, a rare moment of peace and tranquility. Occasionally, he would see the young girl, but she didn't pester him with questions anymore; she was very well-behaved. Chen Feng was almost unaccustomed to this nine-to-five life. Yes, he was somewhat unaccustomed to it; his previous life, full of ups and downs, had been too much of a shock for him.
When night fell, Chen Feng went to bed. Due to the previous stimulation, he was still sensitive and didn't know if he could get a good night's sleep. He struggled with his thoughts for a while before finally falling asleep.
The next morning, as dawn broke, Chen Feng got up early and went to the cafeteria to queue. Judging by the time, the cafeteria was only about halfway through cooking; it shouldn't be too early, right? But when he reached the cafeteria entrance, he realized he was naive. A long queue had already formed inside. Chen Feng couldn't help but sigh; it seemed everyone really had a tough time.
"I guess we won't have to eat leftovers today, since I arrived so early," Chen Feng nodded. The cafeteria opened promptly at the appointed time, serving one portion per person. After waiting for a while, Chen Feng realized there was no one behind him. Could it be that he was the last one to get up? No way, this is late? How early did they get up? When it was Chen Feng's turn to get his food, he found there was only a small amount of rice left, and not much vegetable left either—mostly soup, very little dry food. Chen Feng was stunned. "This isn't good enough? I refuse to believe it! Tomorrow's..."
For Chen Feng now, fighting for breakfast was like a battle; it seemed even a mundane life could become interesting. That night, Chen Feng washed up and went to bed early. He got up around three in the morning and ran to the cafeteria. There were some lights dimly lit. Chen Feng rushed in and found that several people had already left. Apart from the chefs, everyone else was there to eat. Chen Feng suddenly felt very moved. Was their life really that difficult?
Chen Feng couldn't help but step forward and ask, "Do you all get up this early every day?"
One person replied, "No, it's just that today is the day of the teachers' competition. How can we have the energy to compete if we don't eat our fill!"
Chen Feng nodded. Right, how could he forget? Today was the day of the teachers' competition. Luckily, he got up early today, so he could eat a good, filling meal. Gradually, more and more people lined up behind him. When the time came, the cafeteria opened on time. Chen Feng had arrived just in time and ate his fill. Looking at the food in the bowls of those who arrived late, Chen Feng couldn't help but smile wryly.
As dawn broke, the students arrived. The dean and many teachers were dressed rather formally, except for Chen Feng, who remained as carefree as ever.
Teacher Zhang glanced at Chen Feng and shook his head. He looked down on Chen Feng from the bottom of his heart. No matter what Chen Feng was like, even if Chen Feng was dressed very formally today, he still hoped that Teacher Zhang would despise him.
The teachers' competition was held in the academy square, the largest and most spacious area. The square was bustling with people, and the staff had decorated it with lanterns and streamers, creating a lively atmosphere. The older students at the Martial Arts Academy were already very familiar with the place and were filled with anticipation, while the new students were brimming with curiosity and excitement. The participating teachers warmed up on the sidelines, looking eager and ready to compete.
