Chapter 315: _Leave Tomorrow’s Problems
Chapter 315: _Leave Tomorrow’s Problems
Elian’s POV
*****
[Now wasn’t that one of the best battles you’ve seen so far?]
’Not now, system.’
[Wow. Even after I helped you seem smart in front of your mates, I’m still left aside like an annoying ex.]
For once, Elian was too drained to argue further with the system. Currently, he stood just outside Aurora’s room, watching her and Lucian with a distant feeling.
She sat meekly on the edge of her bed, head lowered and fingers fiddling weakly on her lap. Whatever Amara had put her through—it was extensive. And clearly traumatic.
But now he was worried about something. Something he’s never feared since his rebirth:
Losing the trust of a friend who’s treated him as nothing less than a brother since his mate bond with Lucian awakened.
Even now as Lucian whispered something to her, Elian caught her occasionally, throwing weary glances his way.
He knew he told Kyren minutes ago that he didn’t care what she felt about him at the end of the day. But that was a lie. One he was sure the Rogue King easily clocked.
Hiding his true feelings from Kyren was nigh impossible.
[She’s been through a lot, fruitcake. My scanners sense a stressful push in her Alpha aura energy and mental capacity. Probably linked to her prophetic ability.]
’And?’
[That means, Amara most likely didn’t even give her the chance to have the visions freely. She forced them—placing a strenuous mental load on her. Lucian was right. She needs lots of rest and time to process right now.]
Elian’s shoulders relaxed, the tension in his jaw reducing. He sighed softly, watching Lucian finally getting on his feet.
"Seraphyne should be feeling strong enough to see you any minute now." The Alpha Prince remarked, a wry smile stretching his lips. "As for mom. She—"
Not even the system had alerted him of Elowen approaching from his right. Her eyes first scanned him briefly, a smile settling on her features.
But the moment he gave way for her to enter the room, she burst into tears, spreading her arms wide. "Oh, my sweet baby girl." She rushed in, nearly pushing Lucian to hug the princess. "Gods, I’m sorry. Our empire’s security system failed you and your mate."
Aurora’s eyes widened with surprise at first. Her gaze trailed to Lucian who merely gave her a wink, giving them space by walking toward Elian.
"M–Mom, don’t say that." Aurora eventually managed to speak when Lucian got outside the room.
Closing the door behind him, the Alpha Prince turned to face Elian. "I can’t wait to introduce her to Sylas. But not tonight though."
Elian nodded. "Yeah. She’s been through enough for a night. Finding out her long-lost brother is here and has been experimented on. Not to mention he’s a hybrid now—would all be too much."
"You think?"
They both chuckled, Lucian grabbing Elian’s hand. Waltzing through the hallway, the latter felt safe. Comforted.
He didn’t know when he subconsciously leaned closer to Lucian, resting his head on his shoulder. The Alpha Prince flinched for a second, but soon placed a hand on his head.
"It’s been a long day."
Elian made a soft sound. "Hm. A long month, if I may add," they chuckled again, walking past two maids who greeted them with bows. "I’m... I’m still so scared."
Lucian paused for a moment. "Scared of what?"
"Do I even have to mention them?" They finally got in front of Lucian’s room door.
At first, Elian thought they would go on a walk and maybe do some stuff to get their minds off everything. But he could barely even keep up with his walking speed.
He needed a stronger word for "exhaustion".
"Your father’s funeral is in two days," Elian mumbled, shifting his head away from Lucian’s shoulder. "He died days ago... yet it feels like his ghost has been haunting us in more ways than one."
Lucian kept silent, not even bothering to open the door. The hallway was empty anyway.
It was just the two of them.
"Then there’s Amara and Garrick." Elian went on. "Garrick still has control over the palace wards. Nothing is being done about that and I doubt there’s anything that can be done. We’re just waiting for him to unleash his first strike with a system meant to protect the palace."
The Alpha Prince’s lips parted for a second. But no words came out.
Again, he let Elian speak.
"We have a wedding coming up a week from now," he said, lowering his gaze. "All you need now to officially become Alpha King is a coronation ceremony. Then I’ll be your Luna King—while not truly being a werewolf."
When Elian’s voice broke, Lucian finally reacted. Grabbing his shoulder, he pulled Elian into his dimly lit room.
"Room system," Lucian called out without saying anything else to Elian. "Play us a melody: Dance of the stars."
[Well... even I wasn’t able to see that one coming.]
From a dull white light, the room lighting shifted into a soft red light. A holographic projection of star constellations flickered to life above their heads, dotted with numerous colours that made Elian gawk in awe.
"I believe now would be a good time to start dance lessons," Lucian snapped his fingers in front of Elian’s face, bringing his attention back to him. "For our wedding. So..." he drew closer until their bodies tangled with heat and something tender. "Can I have this dance, my love?"
Elian could’ve sworn something melted inside him just then. His face flushed as he grabbed Lucian’s outstretched hand while a sweet, hopeful melody echoed through the room.
Lucian placed his other hand on Elian’s waist, silver eyes locked on him. Making sure he maintained eye contact.
Then the Alpha Prince moved, taking the lead. Elian almost stumbled in the first few seconds, his steps clumsy and disoriented. Soon, however, he got the hang of it.
"You’ve always been a fast learner," Lucian’s lips brushed his ear, voice low and infuriatingly close. "Let’s leave tomorrow’s problems at that. Tomorrow. But now?" He paused, lowering Elian until his back arched toward the ground. "It’s just you and me. Not Amara. Not Garrick. Not my father... us."
Tears stung the corner of Elian’s eyes but he didn’t let them fall. Instead, he smiled. "I love you, Lucian." He mumbled, sniffling.
The latter raised him up, hand still firm on his waist. "Words can’t explain how much I love you, Elian. You’re the only being I truly trust."
When they kissed, it wasn’t hungry or needy. It was soft. Grounding. A gentle reminder that even through the chaos, they always had each other.
Regardless of what the future held for them—
