Chapter 107 Discovering Persimmons
Chapter 107 Discovering Persimmons
After my uncle's wedding, the Chinese New Year was about twenty days away. This year didn't seem as cold as last year. The next morning, Li Xiaoxiao slept until she woke up naturally.
Li Xiaoxiao stretched herself, put on her clothes and walked out of the room. She saw that the snow in the yard had almost melted, with only some white remaining in the corners of the wall.
"Sister, come and see!" younger brother Li Fang shouted in the yard.
Li Xiaoxiao walked into the yard and saw Li Fang playing with a puppy. The puppy was furry and very cute.
"Where did the puppy come from?" Li Xiaoxiao asked.
"It ran in by itself when I opened the door in the morning. I felt sorry for it so I fed it some food," said Li Fang.
Li Xiaoxiao touched the puppy's head, thinking that the puppy might have lost its way or been abandoned by its owner. She decided to take the puppy in temporarily and return it to its owner when she found it.
"Fang'er, since the puppy has already run in, let it stay at home first. We can return it when its owner comes. Otherwise, it would be pitiful to let it run out in such a cold weather."
Li Xiaoxiao named the puppy "Xiaobai" and made a simple nest for it with old clothes. In the following days, Xiaobai became a member of the family, always following Li Xiaoxiao, running around with his tail wagging.
After breakfast, Li Xiaoxiao rarely wanted to go to the mountain to take a look. Although the weather was cold, the snow on the mountain was not thick. Therefore, in order to pass the time, Li Xiaoxiao put on his backpack and took Li Fang and Li Linlin to the mountain.
The three chatted and laughed along the way, especially Li Fang, who had barely been to the mountains since attending the academy, so he was particularly excited. The climb up the mountain was still covered in snow, so the three walked slowly. A journey that usually took half an hour took them a full hour. When they reached the top, Li Xiaoxiao led the two down a path they hadn't walked before. By this time, most of the vegetation had withered, with only a few pine trees still standing tenaciously, their branches occasionally showing hints of tenacious green. Sunlight filtered through the sparse clouds, dappling the ground and adding a touch of warmth to the winter forest.
"Sister, look over there!" Li Linlin called out, pointing to a tree not far away. Its branches were laden with bright red fruits, standing out against the gray winter sky. "Persimmons!" Li Xiaoxiao exclaimed with delight. She remembered how her grandfather often took her to the mountains to pick persimmons when she was little. Those persimmons were so sweet and juicy back then, and it was one of her fondest childhood memories.
"Let's go take a look!" Li Xiaoxiao suggested, and walked towards the persimmon tree with his younger brother and sister. When they got closer, they found that the persimmon tree was even taller than they had imagined. The branches were densely packed with persimmons, all of which were ripe and bright red, as if they would fall off at the slightest touch.
"How are we going to pick all these persimmons?" Li Fang looked up at the tree laden with fruit, a little worried. Li Xiaoxiao thought for a moment and said, "We can find some long sticks to knock the persimmons down. But be careful not to damage the tree." So, the three of them began searching for suitable tools. Soon, Li Xiaoxiao found a long bamboo pole, Li Fang gathered a few thicker branches, and Li Linlin spread a cloth on the ground to catch the falling persimmons.
Li Xiaoxiao carefully held the bamboo pole and reached for the ripe persimmons. With a gentle push, they landed on the cloth with a "plop." Li Fang and Li Linlin excitedly ran around the cloth, eagerly picking up each fallen persimmon as if it were the most precious treasure in the world.
After picking for a while, the three of them felt tired and sat down to rest under the tree. Li Xiaoxiao picked up a persimmon and gently peeled it, revealing the golden flesh. A sweet aroma immediately hit her nose. She took a bite, and the familiar taste instantly awakened her memories, as if she was back to her carefree childhood.
"So delicious!" Li Xiaoxiao exclaimed, handing the remaining persimmons to her younger siblings. Li Fang and Li Linlin followed their sister's example, peeling the skins and devouring them with big mouthfuls, their faces filled with satisfied smiles.
"Sister, these ripe persimmons are so delicious. We have never eaten them before." Li Linlin said while eating persimmons.
"Even though persimmons taste good, you can't eat too much. Eating too many persimmons can cause kidney stones. Just eat one or two." Li Xiaoxiao said to Li Fang and Li Linlin with a smile.
"Sister, what are kidney stones?" Li Fang asked curiously.
"Kidney stones are small stones that grow in the stomach. They're very painful," Li Xiaoxiao explained. "So we can't be greedy."
"Yeah, I see." Li Fang nodded, then turned his gaze to the remaining persimmons on the tree. "But there are still so many persimmons. What should we do?"
Li Xiaoxiao thought for a moment and said, "We can take them back and share them with other people in the village so that everyone can taste these delicious persimmons."
"Good idea!" Li Linlin agreed. "Then let's get started."
So, the three of them set to work again. Before long, the cloth on the ground was filled with persimmons. As the sun began to set, the three of them, carrying their heavy baskets, set out on their journey home. Though they were a little tired, their hearts were filled with joy and a sense of accomplishment.
After the three of them returned home, they divided the persimmons into several portions. After delivering a basket of persimmons to Bai Jing and Bai Dong's homes, Li Xiaoxiao took another portion of persimmons and went to Aunt Chen's house. "Aunt Chen, these are the persimmons we just picked. They are so sweet. Try some," Li Xiaoxiao said with a smile.
Aunt Chen took the persimmon and said happily, "Oh, I haven't seen such bright red persimmons in a long time. They must be very sweet. Where did you pick them?"
"Just over there on the back mountain, there is a big persimmon tree full of persimmons." Li Xiaoxiao replied.
"You are so lucky to find such good persimmons." Aunt Chen said with a smile.
"Yes, we feel very lucky too." Li Xiaoxiao said, "By the way, Aunt Chen, I haven't seen Baoer for a long time. Is he home?"
"He's right here, inside the house. It's warmer there. I'll take you there. Your sister Guihua is looking after him." Aunt Chen couldn't stop smiling when she mentioned her fat grandson.
Li Xiaoxiao followed Aunt Chen to the main hall and saw Baoer sleeping soundly on the kang. The little guy had a rosy face and was sleeping soundly.
"This child was tired from playing today and fell asleep as soon as he came back." Sister Guihua said with a smile.
"Baoer is so cute." Li Xiaoxiao reached out and gently touched Baoer's face.
"Xiaoxiao is getting married soon, right?" Aunt Chen suddenly asked.
"Ah?" Li Xiaoxiao blushed. "It's still early. It'll be next year."
"There's nothing to be embarrassed about. Look, Bao'er is already this big. It will be almost time for you to get married next year." Aunt Chen said with a smile.
"I understand, Auntie." Li Xiaoxiao said with a smile.
After staying at Aunt Chen's house for a while, Li Xiaoxiao went home.
